James writes to Jewish believers scattered across the Roman world, most of whom would never hold a scroll of their own. Scripture reached them out loud, read in the gathering, so “hearing” was the whole religious experience. James presses one step further with a workshop word, poiētēs, a maker. Be makers of the word: people in whom the text becomes something you can watch.

Israel’s daily prayer, the Shema, begins “Hear, O Israel,” and in Hebrew hearing and obeying share one word. Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount the same way: the wise builder is the one who hears these words and does them. James, remembered as the brother of Jesus, is not inventing a rule. He is handing down the family refrain.
